Twelve Laws of Karma

Twelve laws of Karma written in scrabble letters.

In my last post I wrote about a moment of karma in my life and it got me thinking. Did you know there are 12 laws of karma? No? Me neither. So I thought I’d take a little time to visit them.

1. The Great Law Of Karma

“As you sow, so shall you reap.”

This is also known as the “Law of Cause and Effect”. If what we want is happiness, peace, love and friendship, then we should be happy, peaceful, loving and a true friend. Whatever we put out in the world, we get back. That’s karma. It’s like a boomerang.

2. The Law of Creation

“Life doesn’t just happen. It requires our participation.”

There’s a particular goal you want to achieve. Desperately. But every time you think about what you need in order to do it, you pour yourself a glass a wine, settle down for another hour of TV and think about going for it tomorrow. That will not make it happen. You need to engage and participate. Stop making excuses. In my case, I need to roll out my mat and get practicing. Every day.

3. The Law of Humility

“What you refuse to accept, will continue for you.”

You can’t change something if you refuse to accept it in the first place. If I don’t accept that I am bad at time management and slightly avoidant, I will continue to be poor at managing my time and fail to roll out that yoga mat as often as I’d like.

4. The Law of Growth

“For us to grow in spirit, it is we who must change – and not the people, places or things around us.”

Self-actualisation is the key to contentment. You cannot change people, nor can you change your surroundings. The only given we have in our lives is ourselves, and that is the only thing we have control over. No-one else can roll out that mat for me. Well, they can, but they can’t actually DO the yoga for me…

5. The Law of Responsibility

“We must take responsibility for what is in our life.”

This is very closely related to the previous two laws. If there is something wrong with your life look closely in the mirror, take responsibilities for any mistakes and correct the wrong. It’s the only way forward.

6. The Law of Connection

“Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important that it gets done as everything in the universe is connected.”

Steve Jobs resented his childhood calligraphy lessons – he thought they a waste of time. But the same lessons taught him about font design which was very useful years later. Connecting the dots will take you a long way.

7. The Law of Focus

“You cannot think of two things at the same time.”

Multitasking is a great skill. You will get the work done. But you have a better of chance producing better work when you only focus on one thing. Increase those odds for yourself and don’t spread yourself too thinly.

8. The Law of Giving and Hospitality

“If you believe something to be true, then sometime in your life you will be called upon to demonstrate that particular truth.

This is when we put what we claim that we have learned into actual practice.

If you advocate practicing yoga daily, the world will want to know you yourself practice daily (at this point I would like to make the important point that I only advocate STRIVING towards daily practice! At the moment, obviously. That, no doubt after I have improved myself through all these karmic rules, will change).

9. The Law of Here and Now

“Old thoughts, old patterns of behaviour, old dreams prevent us from having new ones.”

Looking back to examine what was or forward to worry about the future prevents us from being fully present with ourselves and others.

10. The Law of Change

“History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need to change our path.”

Learning from mistakes is an important skill, not just from the ones we make, but also from those of others. If we don’t, we’ll keep repeating the same old mistakes.

11. The Law of Patience and Reward

“Rewards of lasting value require patient and persistent toil.”

All rewards require initial toil and those of lasting value require patient and persistent work. True happiness comes from doing whatever we are supposed to be doing now and knowing that the reward will come in its own time. This is particularly tricky with today’s expectations of instant gratification. But work in the knowledge that your time will come.

12. The Law of Significance And Inspiration

“You get back from something whatever you have put into it.”

Just like first and the sixth law, this law states the fundamental law of karma that – as you sow, so shall you reap. The message is simple. It does what it says on the tin – you get out of something whatever you have put in.

That’s quite a wordy post but don’t shoot the messenger. I did warn you there were twelve of them.
